First lady Melania Trump is learning about a painful part of America's history on her first full day in Africa.
On Friday, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will take Melania to visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust before heading to State House for talks.
She will also visit Malawi, Kenya and Egypt to complete her week-long visit to Africa. She approached a crowd of children in royal-blue-and-orange school uniforms who sang in English, "Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome all of you".
Melania Trump, who is in Africa to promote her children's welfare programme, described her visit to the Chipala primary school as "an unbelievable experience". "They are simply taking advantage of their First Lady's high profile visit in Malawi to speak out so that the media here takes their message along as well", he said.
Diplomats' same-sex partners denied US visas
The only exception, however, would be same-sex partners of officials coming from countries that do not recognise same-sex marriage .
The first lady was greeted by Malawi's first lady, Gertrude Mutharika, when she arrived in the country.
"We see, first hand, in Malawian hospitals, the shocking effect the budget cuts may ultimately have".
Despite the president's previous statement, Afful said that "she has come to see how wonderful we are".
"I wanted to be here to see the successful programs that [the] United States is providing the children, and thank you for everything you've done", Trump said.
We will see who United's leaders are - Matic
They do it, they don't do it that's a different story, but I repeat I am naive or I still believe the player is an honest man'. Jose Mourinho has moved to defend his Manchester United players after suggestions that some of them didn't care.
"I was heartened to spend time with the students and was honoured to donate school supplies and soccer balls", she said.
But a few signs of protest were afoot, too, as President Trump is not widely seen as a friend of Africa. They then watched dancers perform three traditional dances, with Malawi's first lady appearing to explain some of the words and movements to Trump.
The event was to "highlight friendly US-Malawi relations" and the pair's "shared interest in helping children and, in particular, helping girls in school", according to the White House.
