Germany is preparing a "substantial" increase in its contributions to the cash-strapped UN agency for Palestinian refugees amid reports that the United States plans to withhold a large share of its funding, according to a letter seen by dpa.
The Trump administration is also reportedly planning on taking issue with how funds are spent by the UN Relief and Works Agency, as well as the number of Palestinians who have access to that money.
The Palestinian leadership has angered the White House by boycotting its peace efforts since President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moved the embassy there in a reversal of decades of US policy. Several countries, including Jordan, Egypt, Sweden, Qatar, and the UAE have shown leadership in addressing this problem, but the overall global response has not been sufficient.
Instead the State Department statement just spoke critically of what it called UNRWA's "endlessly and exponentially expanding community of entitled beneficiaries" - a reference to the fact that descendants of the original refugees are also classified as refugees.
The New York Times reports that the drastic cuts were pushed most forcefully by Jared Kushner, who has been the point man for Middle East peace, despite his lack of any prior experience.
"We are very mindful of and deeply concerned regarding the impact upon innocent Palestinians, especially school children, of the failure of UNRWA and key members of the regional and worldwide donor community to reform and reset the UNRWA way of doing business", she added.
