And in unveiling those moves, Ontario Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod said she has asked the province's Auditor-General to investigate "hundreds of millions of dollars" in fraud in social-assistance payments.
In the intermediate term, the government will provide current Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program recipients with an across-the-board 1.5 per cent increase in support rates to help them with a higher cost of living.
Asked how the government determined the pilot was ineffective before it was over, MacLeod simply said the program was "not doing what it's meant to do and it's quite expensive".
MacLeod said the program was "clearly not the answer for Ontario families", but she didn't provide data backing the decision to end it.
Crews assessing damage to College Lake Dam in Lynchburg
College Lake is a manmade lake, built in the early 1930s by the Virginia Department of Highways as part of the development of U.S. Local fire and police sent boats to rescue people to area shelters, including E.C.Glass High School and Sandusky Middle School.
Jody Dean, a Hamilton resident who participated in the program, said the financial stability granted by the project allowed her to go back to school part-time and to buy parking passes to the hospital where one of her three children receives care. At the time, all provincial party leaders supported the experiment's quest to determine whether unconditional payments to low-income workers and people on welfare improved health, housing and educational outcomes.

The rate increase is half of the 3 per cent planned by the previous Liberal government.

Basic income programs give people "the ability to have some security, to have some autonomy, to have the feeling that you're in control, that you are making decisions that are best for your life, not some bureaucracy that thinks it knows best", she said. Single people in this program could receive up to $16 989 per year, whereas pair - $24 027. That's information any government concerned about vulnerable populations should value, Regehr said. "It's possible there may even be an increase in demand for social assistance because of it".
The project has been running since April 2017. Numerous program's participants seemed shocked and frustrated to learn that their monetary plan for the next three years was being thrown out the window. Ontario's was the first government-backed basic income trial in North America since the 1970s, but on Tuesday, it scrapped the program a full two years before its scheduled end.
