The United States has dismissed Syrian claims accusing it of attacking a Homs air base.
Speaking with NBC News, two U.S. officials confirmed Monday afternoon that the Israeli Air Force was behind the pre-dawn airstrike, which targeted the Syrian military's T-4 airbase in central Syria. When asked by interviewers what Israel's interest in such an attack was, Ben Eliyahu said that it was part of the ongoing efforts to prevent Iran from establishing a base in Syria. "The Israeli aggression on the T4 airport was carried out with F-15 planes that fired several missiles from above Lebanese land", state news agency SANA said.
USA government sources said Washington's assessment of Saturday's attack was that chemical weapons were used.
The Syrian government had denied that any chemical attack had taken place, describing the rumours as "fabrications" and an attempt to deter armed forces from advancing on the city.
