Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has suffered a horrifying injury which denied her the chance to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.

On Monday, the 40-year-old weightlifter dislocated her left elbow as she attempted a Games record 132kg for her last snatch lift in the 90kg+ final at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) states that for transgender women to compete, they must demonstrate their testosterone levels are below 10 nmol/L for "at least 12 months prior to her first competition".

"I'm sure that will come with time", Hubbard told reporters, adding that she had "no regrets" about the record-breaking attempt.

"As the slogan goes, you've got to "earn the fern" - you can't just mail it in".

"She's taken it all in her stride, she's very much a valued member of our team, the few days she's been here she's blended in and fitted in well".

A rear wheel was not fitted properly and, in his haste to get back into the race, Raikkonen's auto hit a team mechanic. Vettel is left to celebrate again, and the win may feel extra special on his 200th Grand Prix start.

"I think it's completely unfair on the other athletes".

"She's ultimately satisfied the IOC and the global weightlifting criteria, so at the end of the day she's made her decision and as a nation we've got to be supportive of her".

"A person is a person and a lady is a lady and I do know a variety of modifications have gone by way of, however prior to now Laurel Hubbard was once a male champion weightlifter", he stated.

Hubbard had been "really buoyed" by the crowd's reaction to her first lift, he said. "But there's no indication at all today that they were anything other than absolutely fantastic, a real credit to the Australian people and also the broader sporting community".

Hubbard's withdrawal paved the way for Stowers to claim the gold with a combined total of 253kg, ahead of Nauruan lifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant (243) and England's Emily Campbell (242).

Paul Coffa, secretary-general of the Oceania Weightlifting Institute, took a more conciliatory line when questioned about Hubbard's transgender status.

In the background, Toro Rosso-Honda and Haas impressed, while McLaren lost touch with those two teams after a promising start. It meant that he wasn't able to take part in Q2, and at best will now start from 15th place on the grid.

Writing for the New Zealand Herald on Sunday, Kris Shannon proposed that Hubbard would be an ideal candidate to represent New Zealand as national flag bearer for the games.

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg said the issue needs "robust debate".

"That's one individual's opinion and perspective. there are probably plenty of opinions and perspectives", Grevemberg said.

Coach Simon Kent said Hubbard had completely ruptured a ligament.
