Unity was described in a statement appearing on Virgin Galactic's website as being, "built from scratch for Virgin Galactic by The Spaceship Company's talented team of aerospace engineers and technicians".
The spacecraft was carried to an altitude of 46,500 feet by its mothership before it was released over California's Mojave Desert yesterday (April 5).
The ship fired its rocket for 30 seconds and hit a top speed of Mach 1.87 (around 1,500 miles per hour) as it zoomed higher, reaching a maximum altitude of 84,000 feet.
Branson tweeted that the company was now "back on track" after the successful powered flight.
We are not in trade war with China
Boeing and Caterpillar led a slide in big USA manufacturers and technology companies that bore the brunt of the U.S. China is by far the world's biggest buyer of soybeans, which are mostly crushed and fed to pigs.
There's video from VSS Unity's first rocket-powered flight, as well.
The company has not yet announced a date for the start of passenger flights but is selling tickets for a ride aboard SpaceShipTwo at $250,000 United States a seat. Virgin Galactic noted that Unity has safety mechanisms resulting from the accident. Virgin Galactic's previously said it expects to fly paid missions in 2018, but it's unclear if that remains a feasible deadline.
The hybrid rocket motor, which was designed, built and tested by The Spaceship Company, powered Unity through the transonic range and into supersonic flight before preparing for its return, Virgin said.
Du Plessis delighted to break long Australia jinx
It led to bans for the captain, vice-captain and a third key batsman, and prompted coach Darren Lehmann to say he was quitting. The sorry innings was brought to its conclusion when Nathan Lyon (nine) was run out.
Other than the technical specifics of the flight, Virgin Galactic didn't say much yesterday.
"It also marks a key moment for the test flight programme, entering now the exciting phase of powered flight and the expansion to full duration rocket burns". Blue Origin's New Shepard design is different the the Virgin Galactic's vehicle, using a reusable capsule that takes off like a conventional rocket, then comes back to the ground via parachute.
Two more SpaceShipTwo vehicles are under construction in Mojave.
The flight was the 12th overall for Unity, which Virgin Galactic officially unveiled in February 2016. The flights come with a hefty starting price tag of $250,000, spokeswoman Christine Choi told Albuquerque Business First in late 2017. The test flight in Nevada brings us one step closer to commercial space tourism.
NASA unveils its supersonic X plane
The experimental plane is meant to cruise at altitudes around 55,000 feet and to reach speeds around 940 miles per hour. NASA's mission, Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator will have the ability to fly supersonic but without any sonic booms.
