The Trump administration announced in September the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, would expire on March 5, while Trump also called for Congress to come up with a legislative fix for those who it would have protected. Without it, so-called "Dreamers" remain in limbo.
Last week, the United States Supreme Court declined to fast track an appeal to the California decision, deciding it has to go through the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals first. United We Dream is advocating for legislation similar to the DREAM Act, which has been shot down by legislators for years.
The Supreme Court has ordered the administration to continue renewing DACA permits while cases progress through the federal courts - a process likely to take months, draining Congress' sense of urgency.
Finding that DACA was amost certainly legal, the California and NY courts then referenced President Donald Trump's campaign statements as evidence the decision was not made for permissible reasons.
