The Dow Jones industrial average gained 669.40 points, or 2.8 percent, to 24,202.60. The Nasdaq Composite (IXIC - 7,008.81) shed 211.7 points, or 2.9%. The Dow lost more than 1,400 points last week and is still down slightly for the year.

Takeda said that buying Shire would enhance its R&D and its reach into the U.S. Shire's U.S. -listed shares climbed $18.10 to $146.97.
Lululemon Athletica rose sharply after reporting strong earnings. The stock rose $16.80 to $92.11. Facebook has lost 20 percent of its value since hitting a record high February 1. The contract declined 30 cents to settle at $65.25 a barrel on Tuesday.
