Police in Canada's largest city of Toronto on Monday accused a landscaper of murdering five people and placing their dead bodies in large planters on his clients' properties across the city in an "unprecedented" case.

A suspected serial killer is now facing charges in conjunction with the deaths of five gay men in Toronto.

McArthur, 66, has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder in what police have characterized as an alleged serial killer situation.

Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga confirmed Wednesday that a planter from a home on Balmoral Avenue, in the area of Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue, had been removed by police but would not say what was inside.

Reports say McArthur was a frequent patron of the Black Eagle, a bar in Toronto's Gay Village, and that at least one man, Abdulbasir Faizi-whose disappearance is under investigation-was seen at the bar the night he disappeared.

On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that the police are investigating multiple properties where McArthur worked as a landscaper. On Monday, three more charges of first-degree murder were added, in connection with the deaths of Majeed Kayhan, 58, Soroush Mahmudi, 50, and Dean Lisowick, 47. "We have seized quite a few planters from around the city and we will continue to do that".

Peter Sgromo told The Associated Press about a violent sexual encounter with McArthur, who he had known for ten years, last April after they met for drinks in Toronto's gay village. "We believe there are more remains at some of these properties that we're working to recover". "There are at least two sites that we do want to excavate where people might be buried".

McArthur is now being referred to as an alleged serial killer, police said.

"I've actually had some conversations with some citizens from the Church and Wellesley area, and they're feeling more of a sense of relief rather than fear", Idsinga said.

The Ministry of the Attorney General said McArthur's lawyer is Jeffery Couse.

On Jan. 18, McArthur was arrested for Esen's and Kinsman's murders and on the same day the police arrived at Karen Fraser and her husband's home with a warrant telling them to evacuate the premises.

"He would drink at the bar with people and never did I pick up something like this", she said of McArthur.

Investigators appealed for anyone who may have used McArthur's services in the past to call them at 416-808-2021. They were in connection with the death of two men who went missing past year.
