The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared that a novel outburst of Salmonella hitched to Kratom.
Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, is a plant in the coffee family that's native to Southeast Asia. It is not yet known how the popular herbal supplement could have been contaminated with salmonella, nor has the outbreak investigation identified a common brand or supplier of kratom. But genetic testing links the cases that have been reported. In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration tried but failed to classify the plant as a Schedule I Controlled Substance.
Despite its perceived health benefits, the consumption of kratom has led to a Salmonella outbreak that has affected at least 28 people-ages 6 to 67-in 20 states in the U.S. Eleven of those people have been hospitalized.

Beyond this recent salmonella outbreak, kratom is becoming a topic of concern across multiple agencies, including the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, for other reasons. The FDA is making efforts to tamp down on misbranded or unapproved drugs entering the country to stop the flow of kratom.
