With the Indian Ocean archipelago got further mired in the political crisis, former President Mohammed Nasheed now in exile in Sri Lanka, sought military intervention from India to release the judges and political detainees.
President Yameen had declared a 15 day state of emergency after his last ditch attempt to convince the top court to revoke the order failed after the apex court rejected the government's "legal and judicial" concerns over the order. "In the light of the latest situation in the Maldive Chinese Foreign Ministry adjusted the security alert level and asked the Chinese citizens to closely follow the local situation and not to travel to the Maldives", Geng said.
The crisis stems from a ruling by the country's Supreme Court that ordered the release and retrial of some opposition party members.
